According to the
New York Times, someone with direct knowledge of the phone’s design said on Thursday that the iPhone 4 exposes a longstanding weakness in the basic communications software inside Apple’s iPhone devices and that the reception problems were not caused by an isolated hardware flaw.
Instead, the problems emerged in the complex interaction between specialized communications software and the antenna. This problem has been plaguing Apple since the first iPhone back in 2007, but had been finally revealed by the new design of the iPhone 4 (with its integrated stainless steel external antenna band). Steve Jobs apparently did not learn about the software problem until after the phone shipped last month.
