MACC probes contract claims at UMS

The Malaysian Anti-Cor ruption Commission (MACC) has begun investigations over “dubious” contracts given out by an employee of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to a company he is allegedly linked to.
MACC officers here have interviewed several employees at UMS over the allegations raised by local contractors.
UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kamaruzaman Ampon, who confirmed that MACC was investigating the issue, said the university was giving its full cooperation.
However, he said an internal audit found that the employee did not have any interest in the company that was given the contracts.
“The employee had resigned from the company before he was employed by UMS on a contract basis,” he said yesterday.
Dr Kamaruzaman explained that the projects were handled by the central board committee and an independent task force will look into the claims of the contractors.
Dr Kamaruzaman said he had also sent a full report to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin.
Meanwhile, four contractors lodged police reports at the Karamunsing police station against the employee yesterday.
One of the contractors, Razak Razali said police should investigate the matter thoroughly.
“We want the police to investigate the matter as we are unhappy with the way things are being handled by the university,” he said.
